We all have some level of stress in our lives. Stress, in small doses and for short periods of time, is completely fine and not harmful. It is when stress becomes long term that it becomes a problem.
There are three types of stress that our body is subjected to – emotional, physical, and chemical. Emotional stress can be caused by happy events such as marriages and births or unhappy events such as deaths, job loss, money troubles, etc. Some ways to manage emotional stress include talking to someone you love and trust about your feelings to help release them from your body, deep belly breathing, and even some form of physical movement such as walking, dancing, jogging, or swimming.
To perform deep belly breathing, I invite you to place one had on your chest and one hand on your belly and take a deep breath. Did your chest rise or your belly? Hint: With deep belly breathing, you want your belly to inflate when breathing in to allow lots of fresh oxygen in and you want your belly to deflate when breathing out to get as much carbon dioxide out to allow more room for life giving oxygen on your next breath. Observe a baby breathing to see how it’s belly inflates with a breath in and deflates with a breath out. This breathing takes practice; however, is our natural way of breathing. I invite you to practice this when you are having trouble sleeping at night as it will take your mind off what is bothering you, relax your nervous system, and bring in lots of life giving oxygen.
Physical stress includes things such as sports injuries, car accidents, and surgery. Some of you may know that six years ago I had breast cancer. This cancer changed my life for the better and I am grateful for it each and every day. It has given me a new perspective on life and a new appreciation for everything that I have. What I want to tell you about this time is that I chose to have surgery to remove the mass. When they suggested surgery, I requested time to prepare my body for the trauma that it was about to encounter. After the surgery, I used more natural therapies to assist my body in healing. Although surgery is entered into to repair or fix an issue, it is also traumatic to your body.
Some of the most beneficial things that you can do to assist your body in healing from physical stress is to ensure that you drink lots of clean, pure water to assist it in staying lubricated and repairing quickly as well as to flush toxins out; eating nutrient-dense foods to help it repair including:
- Lots of green vegetables such as sprouts, green leafy vegetables, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower
- Grass-fed proteins such as grazed beef, free-range chickens, etc if you choose to eat meat
- Healthful fats such as avocados, olive oil, coconut oil, and nuts and seeds
- Complex carbohydrates such as beans and legumes, and whole grains like quinoa and brown rice
and ensuring that your body remains flexible through moving it and stretching it each day. Recently, I injured my back. It is common to want to lay around and rest the injury to allow it to heal. This may be beneficial for a brief period of time; however, it is also important to keep moving it to keep the blood flowing to the injury for speedy recovery as well as to prevent the area from tightening up and spasming. Yoga poses are an amazing way to move your body in a gentle, yet effective fashion, that will assist you in remaining flexible into your high numbers of age. Being flexible ensures that you age gracefully and also helps with balance. Having amazing balance will help with injury prevention.
Chemical stress includes things such as toxins we breathe every day in our air, toxins we eat every day on our food, and toxins we drink every day through our water as well as medications that we may take. While medications are necessary sometimes, it is also important to realize that they are foreign substances that our body has to detox and figure out what to do with. Again, eating nutrient-dense foods including lots of green vegetables; drinking lots of clean, pure water; and moving and stretching every day is going to assist your body in ridding itself of these toxins.
I also invite you to explore nutritional cleansing which supports your body’s natural cleansing functions. The reality is that we are subjected to way more toxins nowadays than we ever used to be. Each day many new chemicals are created and not tested. We have no idea what the long-term effects of these substances are on our body. I invite you to protect your body as much as possible to ensure that you live healthfully into the high numbers of age in optimal health and wellness.
